Pokémon Sun and Moon are role-playing games for the Nintendo 3DS set in the Alola region, which is based on Hawaii. Instead of the usual gym battles, you take on island trials, and some classic Pokémon appear in new Alolan forms suited to the tropical climate.
The games came out in 2016, the 20th anniversary of Pokémon and the same year the smartphone game Pokémon GO became a worldwide sensation. Interest in the series was very high, and they became big hits in Japan.
