Before you go

Most of what makes a Japan trip run smoothly is sorted in the ten minutes before you fly — a few apps installed, a plug adapter packed, and a rough idea of cash versus card.

PACKING LIST

Type A plug adapter
Japan uses the two flat-pin Type A plug at 100V. Bring an adapter if your country uses a different shape; most modern electronics handle 100–240V automatically, so a step-down converter is rarely needed.
Portable battery pack
You will lean on your phone all day for maps, translation and transit apps — a 10,000mAh+ power bank keeps it running.
Comfortable, easy-off shoes
You will remove your shoes constantly — temples, some restaurants, ryokan, homes. Slip-ons save time and dignity over laced boots.
A small day bag
For carrying essentials on foot once your main suitcase is forwarded ahead by courier — see the Flights guide for how that works.
Cash for the buffer
A few thousand yen for the cash-only shops, shrines and rural areas that cards still miss — see the Payment guide.

APPS TO INSTALL BEFORE YOU FLY

Set these up while you still have reliable home WiFi — some need it to activate or download an offline pack.

eSIM or Pocket WiFi — Set up while you still have home WiFi

Offline Google Maps — Download the cities you will visit

Google Translate's Japanese offline pack — Needs a connection to download once, then works offline
