About

The setting is Taisho era Japan. Tanjirou is a kindhearted young boy who lived peacefully with his family as a coal seller. Their normal life changes completely when his family is slaughtered by demons. The only other survivor, Tanjirou's younger sister Nezuko, has become a ferocious demon. In order to return Nezuko to normal and get revenge on the demon that killed their family, the two of them depart on a journey. From a young talent, an adventure tale of blood and swords begins!

Character analysis

Tanjiro KamadoA kind-hearted charcoal seller who refuses to stop seeing his demon sister as human

Tanjiro comes home to find his family slaughtered and his sister Nezuko turned into a demon, and instead of killing her like demon-slaying tradition demands, he sets out to find a cure. His gentleness, unusual for an action protagonist, is treated as a real strength, he keeps noticing the tragic histories behind the demons he has to fight rather than just defeating them.

Nezuko KamadoTanjiro's demon sister, fighting her own instincts to protect humans instead of eating them

Nezuko is turned into a demon in the same attack that kills the rest of her family, and she spends the story suppressing the hunger for human flesh that should define her kind. Her muffled, mostly non-verbal presence doesn't stop her from being one of the story's most important characters, her restraint is itself the proof that Tanjiro's hope for a cure isn't naive.

Zenitsu AgatsumaA terrified swordsman who fights brilliantly only when he's unconscious

Zenitsu spends most of his time begging to go home and panicking about danger, but his one devastating sword technique only comes out when fear knocks him out cold. The gap between his cowardly waking personality and his lethal asleep self is one of the series' most reliable running jokes.

Inosuke HashibiraA boar-masked fighter raised in the mountains with no idea how to read a room

Inosuke grew up wild in the mountains and challenges everyone he meets, including his own allies, to a fight by default. His feral confidence and complete lack of social skills are played for comedy, but his raw combat instincts, developed with no formal training at all, are genuinely dangerous.

Giyu TomiokaA distant senior swordsman who gives Tanjiro his one chance at survival

Giyu is the demon slayer who spares Tanjiro and Nezuko's lives at the very start of the story, despite tradition demanding he kill them both, and his quiet, withdrawn manner hides exactly why he was willing to bend the rules. He reappears as a measuring stick for how far Tanjiro has come as a swordsman.

Rifu

“A demon hunter whose top priority is curing the demon on his back, not killing her, sets the tone for the whole series.”
