About
Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she’s only interested in his body—eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own.
Character analysis
Kaneki's date with Rize goes wrong when she turns out to be a ghoul, and an emergency surgery using her organs leaves him half-ghoul himself. The rest of the story is Kaneki trying, and mostly failing, to hold onto his old sense of who he is while his body and his hunger keep pulling him toward the ghoul side.
Touka works at Anteiku by day and fights to protect other ghouls by night, and that split is the whole point of her character, she refuses to be only the violent half of what she is. She's initially hostile to Kaneki for being too human-minded about his new ghoul half, but that friction is really her own fear of what happens when the two sides of a life like hers stop being separate.
Rize appears only briefly in the present-day story, but the circumstances of her attack on Kaneki and the organs he receives keep her influence present throughout, sometimes literally, as a hallucination in his mind. She works less as a traditional villain and more as the event the whole story keeps circling back to.
Nishiki is introduced as dangerous competition for Kaneki, feeding in Anteiku's territory without permission, but the story uses him to show that ghoul society has its own codes and relationships, not just random violence. His shift from antagonist to reluctant ally tracks with how the story slowly complicates its own ghoul-versus-human setup.
Hide knew Kaneki before any of the ghoul trouble started, and he keeps trying to reach the Kaneki he remembers even as his friend changes in ways he doesn't fully understand. He represents the ordinary life and ordinary friendship that Kaneki's transformation puts increasingly out of reach.
Status evaluation
The art is a genre highlight, moving from quiet character work to visceral body-horror imagery without losing its polish.
Kaneki's forced transformation and identity crisis give the story a strong emotional spine, even as the wider ghoul-versus-human conflict gets more complicated.
This is a bleak, tragedy-driven story with very little comic relief.
Kaneki's loss of his old self and his fractured relationships with Touka and Hide are consistently devastating.
Body horror and predatory ghoul attacks give this real horror-movie tension in places.
Graphic violence, including torture and body horror, is a defining part of the series.
Ghoul society, investigator organizations, and Kaneki's own shifting loyalties add up to a dense, demanding plot.

“Kaneki's first bite changes everything about him, and the story never lets you forget it.”
