About
Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that leveled Tokyo. At the core of the agency's motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear of an unthinkable, monstrous power known only as Akira.
Character analysis
Kaneda leads a rough, small-time biker gang through Neo-Tokyo's ruins, and when his closest friend Tetsuo starts developing terrifying psychic powers, Kaneda's loyalty gets tested against a threat way beyond anything street gangs or the police can handle.
Tetsuo has spent his whole life as Kaneda's less capable sidekick, and the sudden, uncontrollable psychic power he gains after an accident becomes both his liberation from that role and a genuine threat to everyone around him. His spiral from resentful kid to world-ending psychic force is the story's central tragedy.
Kei is connected to the underground resistance movement fighting against the government's secret psychic experiments, and her clear-eyed assessment of how dangerous Tetsuo has become puts her directly at odds with Kaneda's loyalty to his old friend.
Akira himself appears only rarely and says almost nothing, having been kept in careful government containment since the disaster his own psychic power caused years earlier. His near-mythic presence, discussed by everyone and barely seen directly, looms over the entire story as a warning about where Tetsuo is headed.
The Colonel commands the government's efforts to contain the growing psychic threat, caught between political pressure, scientific uncertainty, and the sheer scale of power Tetsuo and Akira represent.
Status evaluation
Extraordinarily detailed, meticulously rendered art of Neo-Tokyo is a landmark achievement in manga visual ambition.
The friendship-turned-cosmic-tragedy between Kaneda and Tetsuo is widely regarded as one of the genre's defining science fiction epics.
This is a serious, often bleak cyberpunk epic with very little comic relief.
Tetsuo's tragic unraveling and his fractured friendship with Kaneda give the story real, heavy emotional weight.
Tetsuo's body-horror transformation and the scale of destruction create genuine, sustained dread.
Violence and body horror are shown in direct, often disturbing detail.
Government conspiracies, psychic mythology, and a sprawling cast ask for real attention to follow.
This is a completed series. This figure has not been verified against a current source and should be treated as approximate.

“A friendship that starts with one guy always looking out for his weaker best friend, and ends with that same friend becoming powerful enough to threaten the entire city. That escalation still hits hard.”
