Pick by trip type
Where to stay depends on what kind of trip it is. Find yours below.
First visit · Naha-focused tripStay inKokusai-dori
Kokusai-dori
Kokusai-dori is Naha's main street, and staying near it puts the shops, restaurants and evening crowds on your doorstep. The Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport to Makishi Station at its east end with no change.
Island day trips from NahaStay inTomari
Tomari
If you plan to take ferries out to the islands, stay near Tomari Port. The nearest monorail station is Miebashi, fourteen minutes from the airport, so early sailings do not mean a long trip across town.
Early-morning arrivalStay inAsahibashi
Asahibashi
Check-in is hours away when you land in the morning. Asahibashi is the closest area on the monorail, eleven minutes from the airport, so you can leave your bags at the hotel and set off from the bus terminal next door.
Late-night arrivalStay inAsahibashi
Asahibashi
Naha Airport is close to the city, so a late landing is not a problem. Asahibashi is the shortest monorail ride from the airport, which gets you to bed quickly after a long flight.
Travelling with childrenStay inOmoromachi
Omoromachi
Omoromachi is a newer district with big shops and a park, which makes days with children easy. It is on the same monorail from the airport, with no change.
On a budget · Long stayStay inAsahibashi
Asahibashi
For a longer or cheaper stay, Asahibashi keeps room prices down and puts the bus terminal next door for trips around the island, while Kokusai-dori is a short ride away.
Couples · A quieter stayStay inShuri
Shuri
Shuri is a quiet hillside near Shuri Castle, on the same monorail from the airport. Evenings are calm, and central Naha is a monorail ride away when you want to go out.
What about the resort coast?
Many people picture an Okinawa trip as a beach resort, and the resort hotels on the coast north of Naha are what that looks like.
If the beach and the hotel are the point of the trip, a few nights on the resort coast are worth it.
As a base for getting around, though, Naha wins: the airport, the monorail and the bus terminal are all here, and the resorts are a long way up the island.
Ask whether the hotel is the trip or a stop on it. If it is the trip, book the coast for those nights; otherwise stay in Naha and visit for the day.
