Isolated high in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Takayama (often called Hida-Takayama) kept its Edo-era layout and its skilled carpenters. The Sanmachi district is a grid of dark-wood merchant houses now full of sake breweries and craft shops. Twice a year the Takayama Festival parades enormous gilded floats. The town is the usual base for visiting the thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go.
