One of the first ports opened to foreign trade in 1868, Kobe keeps a European-flavoured hillside district (Kitano) of former merchant houses and one of Japan's three great Chinatowns (Nankinmachi). The city is wedged on a narrow strip between the Rokko mountains and Osaka Bay; a ropeway climbs to a herb garden and the classic sparkling night panorama. It rebuilt quickly after the 1995 earthquake.
