The former seat of the wealthy Maeda clan, Kanazawa escaped WWII bombing and keeps whole Edo-era neighbourhoods intact: the Nagamachi samurai quarter and the Higashi Chaya geisha district. Kenroku-en is ranked among the three finest landscape gardens in Japan. The city produces almost all of the country's gold leaf. Reachable from Tokyo in 2.5 hours since the Hokuriku Shinkansen opened.
