The seat of Japan's first shogunate from 1185, Kamakura is packed with Zen temples and shrines in a bowl of wooded hills open to Sagami Bay. The 11-metre bronze Great Buddha at Kotoku-in has sat in the open air since a tsunami swept away its hall in 1498. The retro Enoden tram rattles along the coast to Enoshima. An easy day trip from Tokyo, busy on weekends.
