Part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone has been an onsen retreat since the Edo period, when it was a checkpoint on the old Tokaido highway. The "Hakone Loop" strings together a mountain railway, a cable car, a ropeway over the sulphur vents of Owakudani, and a boat across Lake Ashi, from which Mt Fuji rises on clear days. Ryokan with private baths make it a classic one-night trip from Tokyo.
