About

Ne'er-do-well Kaiji Itou's shiftless existence is suddenly rattled by a visit from the yakuza. Burdened by debt and resentment, Kaiji is coerced into gambling for his worthless life. As the stakes grow higher and the rules become increasingly more bizarre, Kaiji must finally take the future into his own hands!

Character analysis

Kaiji ItouA broke, lazy young man who becomes brilliant only when everything is on the line

Kaiji is not a hero at the start. He is in debt, he wastes his days, and he spends his free time losing at cheap games. What makes him special is that he only becomes sharp when he is close to losing everything. In normal life he is a loser, but inside a deadly game he notices tricks that no one else sees. He also keeps trusting people even after they betray him, which is both his weakness and the reason readers root for him.

Yuuji EndouThe loan shark who pulls Kaiji into the world of gambling

Endou is the man who comes after Kaiji for a huge debt, because Kaiji agreed to back a loan for a coworker who then disappeared. He then offers a way out: a night of gambling on a ship. He is not the final villain, but he is the door into the story. He shows how this world works. Money is everything, and people who owe it are treated like objects. His calm, business-like attitude makes that feel even colder.

Yukio TonegawaA sharp executive who faces Kaiji in a battle of minds

Tonegawa runs most of the company's cruel games and is very good at reading people. When he faces Kaiji, it is not a fight of luck but of who can see through the other first. He is a great rival because he is smart, not just evil. His cold speeches to the debtors about how the world works sum up the harsh message of the whole series.

Kazutaka HyoudouA rich old man who pays to watch desperate people gamble

Hyoudou owns and sponsors the underground games and treats other people's suffering as entertainment. He rarely gets his own hands dirty, which makes him feel untouchable. For Kaiji, he is the final wall: the person who made the rules everyone else has to live or die by. Through him, the story asks a simple question about fairness, and why the people with money get to decide everything.

Status evaluation

OVERALL4/5(Based mainly on Art, Story, Comedy, and Emotion)
ARTSTORYCOMEDYEMOTIONSCARINESSGORECOMPLEXITYVOLUME
Art3/5

The rough style, with sharp chins and noses, is not pretty, but it is very easy to recognize. Its "zawa zawa" sound effect, used for tense moments, became famous in Japan.

Story5/5

Each game has clear rules and a clever twist. The series won the 22nd Kodansha Manga Award (general category) in 1998.

Comedy2/5

There are a few darkly funny moments, but the tone is mostly tense and serious.

Emotion4/5

Kaiji keeps getting betrayed and keeps getting back up. What happens to the people around him hits hard.

Scariness3/5

There are no monsters, but the fear of losing everything makes many scenes very stressful.

Gore3/5

Some games end in serious injury or death. It is shown directly but not in great detail.

Complexity4/5

You need to follow the rules of each game and the mind games around them, which asks for attention.

Volume3/5

This first series ran from 1996 to 1999, and AniList lists it at 13 volumes and 158 chapters. The story continues in later Kaiji series. This figure has not been verified against a current source and should be treated as approximate.

Editor's comment

Rifu

“Kaiji is useless in everyday life and a genius when his life is on the line. Every game made me hold my breath until the last page.”
